More on the Artist:

Dr Tete Mbambisa stands as one of South African jazz’s most profound and quietly influential figures — a self-taught pianist, composer, and bandleader whose music carries the memory, resilience, and imagination of a nation.

Emerging from the Eastern Cape, Mbambisa developed his distinctive voice not through formal conservatory training, but through deep listening, instinct, and lived experience, shaping a harmonic language that is unmistakably his own. Rising to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, Mbambisa became a central architect of modern South African jazz.

His landmark big-band album Tete’s Big Sound (1976), featuring the celebrated composition “Black Heroes,” remains one of the most important orchestral jazz statements produced in the country during apartheid — bold, socially conscious, and musically expansive.

His work bridges township jazz, bebop, African rhythmic traditions, and modern harmonic sophistication, creating music that speaks both locally and globally.

Beyond recording, Dr Mbambisa’s compositions have travelled the world, performed and revered by generations of South African musicians and international ensembles. His music forms a living archive — preserving heritage while continually inspiring new voices. In recognition of this extraordinary contribution, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate, affirming his role as a custodian of South Africa’s jazz legacy.

His performance at the Alma Cafe celebrates not only a master storyteller whose compositions add rich chapters to the history of South African jazz — music shaped by struggle, dignity, and enduring beauty.
